Kiss ramblings – May 2012

When disappointment turned into a wonderful surprise!

WOW! It has been a busy month. It all started with disappointment when Sonisphere were cancelled last month. And even if I’m seeing the band on the Kruise in October I had really looked forward to the show in July. But what did we get instead…? A one of show in OSLO! I must admit I almost hit the ceiling when I got the news that the show at Kollen was confirmed. And It wasn’t easy keeping quiet to all the great Kiss fans I know during the weeks before the festival went public with the news. Who would have guessed that Kiss would do their only performance in Europe in tiny little Norway? Even if It’s probably a quite logical because the economy here is probably the best in Europe right now. And Norway is full of Kiss fans. Probably most per capita in the world. Just look at the attendance figures for the Kiss Kruise right now. Continue reading

Kiss ramblings II – April 2012

The Amish Kiss Army strikes again…

The last weeks there has been much to think about in the “Kissworld”. It seems that Kiss two appearances on “Dancing With The Stars” more or less mobilized all the negative forces in Kiss fandom on the Internet. Not that there is anything wrong with being critical of the appearances or anything else in the world of Kiss. But when a few fans starts to get very vocal about the same old topics they have had issues with for over ten years It get’s really boring, very fast.

It all started with Paul’s vocal issues in New Orleans. Most fans were troubled and showed concerns about his voice. That is as one should expect. And some even ment that It was time to call It a day, and quit if he didn’t get better. A fair opinion. But then you get all the hangers on that started discussing all the same shit they have raved about for over the last decade. Everything from “Bring back Ace and Peter”, “Kiss is a tribute band” , “Double standards” and all the stuff about the make-up. Rambling on like drunken idiots in the street. Not knowing when enough is enough and It’s time to stop. It’s not that we haven’t understood that a lot of people have issues with Tommy, Eric, the make-up etc. But please give It a rest, please… If I had hated what the band is today I would not bother using any time on them and just concentrate on what was and live on those memories. Kiss ramblings – April 2012

A Monster and the pink elephant

It has been a couple of busy weeks in this ‘Kissworld’ and on all the Kiss forums on the Internet. At first we had the Opening of Kiss Monster Mini Golf. An event that probably would not have gained much publicity if Kiss had not been there themselves. Not something that I really care much for myself. But It was fun seeing a complete band without makeup looking real good. The ‘golf thing’ in itself doesn’t bother me at all, I just find It a little goofy. Just as getting married in a Kiss chapel. It’s just not for me… But if Gene & Paul can earn money from It the more power to them.

On March 20th Kiss both had a press-conference with Mötley Crüe announcing “The Tour” they are playing this summer, and  played four songs on Jimmy Kimmel.

The press conference was also the debut of the new Monster outfits. I’m still on the fence about them. But I have always had problems with new outfits. So they probably will sink in sooner or later. The only thing I know I will continue to have problems with are Gene’s ‘unbrushed’ dinosaur teeth. They just make him look to big. And there is something about how they are positioned so they look as they are put on the wrong way. The feather shoulder pads Paul had on the press conference and on Kimmel I have no problem with. It’s the top with all the silver details that looked a little strange to me. But as I said, both outfits will probably grow on me. Continue reading

Kiss ramblings – March 2012

It’s rambling time again…

Just got through a couple of more months with more sick parents and kids. It’s safe to say I’m more than tired of all that stuff. But the spring is coming soon so life will probably get better in general.

Tonight I will probably decide for myself if I’m going to take the trip to Sonisphere festival this summer to see the only Kiss show in Europe in 2012. I really want to but I really don’t know if I have the time or money. If I’m going It will be a quick trip back and forth. So we will just have to wait and see. Will I go or not…?

At least I will get to see Kiss on the Kiss Kruise II in October. The trip is more or less paid for already. I’m sharing a mini suite with three of my friends, and I’m really looking forward to going. It really feels that the last year have not been my year, so I really need something cool like the Kruise this year. And going with some really cool friends does not make It worse. So I’m really looking forward to that. Not being able to go last year didn’t feel good at all.

I have also slowly started to cleaning up in cellar. I have a large room that more or less will be my man cave/Kiss room when I get It done. I have so much stuff that I really want to display and get up on the walls, so It will be really cool when I get It done. It is something I really have been dreaming of doing for years. And of course I will post pics here when I’m ready. Continue reading

Interview with Dennis Woloch

The design wizard

Ever since I since I discovered Kiss in the 70′s, the design and packaging of the albums and merchandise have always fascinated me. And the ‘magic world’ of illustrations and typography It showed me had a lot to do with my own choices later in my working life. So It’s a real pleasure to be able to publish this interview I have done with the Kiss design ‘mastermind’ in the 70′s and 80′s, Dennis Woloch. It’s a dream I have had since I read the great interview he did with the ‘Kiss This’ fanzine in the beginning of the 90′s. And thank you very much Dennis for being to willing to answer these questions. You have made my day.

Q. Tell us a little about your background and what kind of work you did for you did for Howard Marks before you started working with Kiss.

I was the Art Director at Howard Marks Advertising in New York for 22 years. Eventually I became the VP/ Creative Director.
As an art director, my job is to come up with concepts for the project at hand, then design it and do the layout. If the job calls for an illustration or photograph, it’s the art director’s job to select the right person for that particular project. You bring it to life.

Some of our clients were Wall Street firms, Women’s shampoo, Cosmetics and Diaper Services (they competed with disposable diapers) So my experience and challenges were all over the place. We also had a greeting card Company (American Greetings) for a client. We did a large project which used pop star music celebrities, their photos and lyrics to some of their music on posters and greeting cards. I was getting experience in showbiz. We had so many projects and clients that I could not remember 5 percent of what we did in those days. We were busy. Continue reading

Gene Simmons: A Rock ‘N Roll Journey in the Shadow of the Holocaust

Gene & Flora in Ross Bergs eyes

One of the real characters in the “Kiss web world” is Ross Berg. He has always been very vocal online about his interest and admiration for Gene and Floras (Genes mother) life, and how the Holocaust and their life in Israel after the second world war has formed them as humans, when It comes to Flora to a degree I really didn’t totally understand myself. When Ross told us all that he would be publishing a book on his own I was really interested in how the result would come out. And maybe It would help me understanding his fascination for Flora. So how did It all turn out?

Ross Berg’s “A Rock ‘N Roll Journey in the Shadow of the Holocaust” is probably the strangest Kiss related book I have ever read. And I have read It three times now, and still are not sure what I think of the book. First of all. I like what Ross has tried to do with this book. The narrative way he writes the book could bring characters more to life. But It takes a really strong author to do something like that. I just don’t know how well I feel he has succeeded. Some parts of the book works really well but other parts doesn’t. More than one time the characters thoughts become to much fiction and a little to dramatic for my taste.

Another problem I have with the book is that I’m not really sure If Ross was the right person to write a book like this with his background. It is written with a very “Jewish American” point of view. And for me who has a very different point of view when It comes both religion and the state of Israel some of his conclusions in the book are a little hard difficult to agree with when Ross seems to write from a slightly religious perspective. I’m sure that Ross and Gene may have some of the same views, but It becomes a little to subjective for my taste. And Gene seems very little like a religious person.  So the characters probably become a little more what Ross want them to be than who they really are. Even if his facts are good and interesting to read. Continue reading
